Bishop Eaton’s 2020 God’s Work, Our Hands message

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace
As Bishop Eaton indicates her message, 2020 is an unusual year so doing some of th things we did for GWOH Sunday 2019 are not possible. But Bishop Eaton provides some doable activities. More ideas are available in the GWOH Toolkit and Addendum below.
The day will begin with our 9 a.m. worship service which will include a special GWOH’s commissioning.

As a member of Zion Lutheran, how are you participating in this Sunday ELCA-wide event? God’s Work, Our Hands is an opportunity to show God’s love in our work through our efforts. Anything you can do for a friend or neighbor is a good way to show God’s love. Here are a few activites you can join.

Meet at the Zion cemetery (next to Little League field on Dutch Hill); start at 11 a.m.; plan to spend 3-4 hours

What to bring:

         Work gloves

Water (no bathroom available but church will be open)

         Yard rake

         Brush clippers

Gas trimmer (if you have one); gas

Bring food items to the Saturday or Sunday service even if you are not able to stay for the service.

Drop off items throughout the week during office hours

         Mon and Wed – 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Tues and Thurs – 8 a.m. to noon

Put your items directly into the People’s Pantry on Greenwood Street.

We are purchasing cards to send to the residents of the Nursing Home know they are not alone. A hand-written message will mean a lot to the residents.

Contact the church 570-668-2180 Wednesday or Thursday to request cards. You will get a return call that your call was received. We can bring the cards to you and pick them up when you are done if you wish. We’ll provide a suggested messge to write in the cards.

The office is not open Friday but Pastor will check the phone messages. You will get a return call that your call was received.

We’ll give you a message you can use in the cards.

The cards will be delivered to the Nursing Home for distribution when they are all completed.

If interested, give the church a call at 570-668-2180 or email

We have a request for some outdoor chaulking work to be done here in town. That should take about 1 hour.

Walk Thru Communion – Sunday afternoon from Noon to 2 p.m. here at Zion. (Help is needed)

Here’s one almost anyone can do – Call some friends you haven’t spoken to recently and let them know you were thinking about them.

We will get together Sunday at 6 p.m. on Zoom to share our experiences from the day. (You may want to try out this link for the actual meeting time.)
