Bags with picnic food items were distributed to 34 families in the Tamaqua area thanks to the efforts of seven local congregations. The July 4th food project began several years ago when Melody Gensure and Ann Marie Hadesty asked Tamaqua churches to supply various picnic items for families in need on the July 4th holiday. The project was continued this year by members of the Zion Lutheran outreach team. All Tamaqua churches were invited to participate. Each bag contained hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, baked beans, condiments, pickles, drink mixes, freezer pops, pretzels or chips and mac and cheese kits. Churches participating in the project included Bethany ECC, Primitive Methodist, St. John’s UCC, St. John XXIII, St. John’s Lutheran, Trinity UCC and Zion Lutheran. The bags were distributed a few days prior to the mid-week holiday. ABOVE: Members of the Zion Lutheran outreach team with some of the items going into the holiday food bags.
